Detailed Description
Hiatus is an immersive original from from Kirsty Nixon’s Flora & Fauna collection—an ode to the quiet moments found in Aotearoa’s native bush. Large in scale and generous in feeling, this striking work invites the viewer into a still, sun-warmed world where time seems to pause and the spirit can rest.
At the heart of the composition, a solitary Tūī perches on a bloom of deep red harakeke, its feathers shimmering with iridescent blue and green. The contrast of its plumage against the sprawling flax draws the eye, while soft, dusty blue skies break through the canopy—evoking the warmth and stillness of a quintessential New Zealand summer.
Framed by cabbage trees and unfurling harakeke fans, the scene is layered with depth and movement. More than a painting, it feels like a window opened to the wild—inviting presence, memory, and breath.
Known for its melodic call and bold personality, the Tūī is often heard before it’s seen. In Māori mythology, it’s a heavenly messenger—symbolising life fulfilment, spiritual harmony, and confidence.
Hiatus becomes a portrait of peace. The Tūī’s quiet presence and the vibrant bush around it speak to both the energy of life and the grace of pausing within it.
Contemplative, soulful, and deeply rooted in place, Hiatus brings the beauty and rhythm of the natural world indoors—offering connection, reflection, and quiet joy.
